We had three very large trees pollarded to the rear of our communal garden, and now the space is transformed. I have never seen such a professional team of tree surgeons. All their kit, machines and ropes were of top standard and the care they took over their chainsaws was the best I have ever seen and I am a chain saw instructor. I know what Health and Safety demands when undertaking such dangerous work and Michael and his team ticked all the boxes.
Can the roots of trees be pruned ? .
While root pruning is an accepted arboricultural practice, the extent of pruning and the specific types of roots affected should be carefully evaluated to avoid compromising tree health and stability.
- Structural roots – integral to anchor and support a tree’s structure in the ground via cohesion.
- Absorptive roots – non-woody short lived fibrous roots of less than one millimetre in diameter that form important symbiotic relationships with mycorrhizal fungi. Their primary function is the uptake of water and nutrients to areas of the tree that require resources for growth and reactive growth.
The importance of a tree’s root zone and the surrounding soil is essential for structural cohesion and nutrient availability and often overlooked. These elements are critical to the tree’s stability and overall physiological health.
Roots serve as the tree’s lifeline, anchoring it securely in the soil while enabling the uptake of water and nutrients necessary for the tree we see above ground.
Do I need permission to prune branches that overhang from a neighbouring property?
Whilst there is a common law right to prune branches that overhang property, an application to carry out work to a tree, either protected by a Tree preservation Order (TPO) or within in a Conservation Area requires consent from the local council planning team in the form of, an application, or a ‘Section 211 Notice – Works to Trees within a Conservation Area’, respectively.
We can provide this service on your behalf or assist with advice for submitting planning applications.
When is the best time to prune trees?
The optimal time to prune trees varies between species.
Our knowledgeable team considers the pruning season and external, biotic and abiotic factors which can have an impact on a tree’s response to pruning to provide you with sound advice for your tree’s prosperity.
Can I send photos of a tree for an opinion or some advice?
Yes, you’re welcome to send clear photos by WhatsApp or email. We’re often happy to offer general advice or an opinion based on images, especially if you include relevant details and let us know about any specific concerns.
If we feel a closer inspection is needed, we’ll be in touch to arrange a convenient time to visit and assess the situation in person.
Will the arising branches and wood from my tree pruning or felling be removed?
As part of our service, Arb Tree Works outlines clear arrangements for the responsible disposal of all branch and wood timber arisings generated during our work.
Clients are increasingly requesting that the woodchip generated from our work be retained for use on their property. We are glad to support this as awareness of the many benefits to soil, plants and fungi grows!
As awareness increases into the benefit of retaining wood & deadwood volumes, we are also glad to support the retention of this for the benefit to the surrounding ecology and firewood.
